Gift Registries

Q: My fiancé and I were wondering what the correct etiquette is regarding gift registries? My parents are opposed to the idea as they feel that demanding a gift is presumptuous, but we feel that it is actually a more practical way of receiving gifts that we actually need! How can we ask people to use the gift registry without offending anyone?

A: There are no hard and fast rules to follow - it really boils down to a matter of necessity. Couples mainly choose the registry option because it really is more practical. As far as gifts are concerned, you may receive some that you won`t need or two of the same thing. You will then have to try to exchange the gift - which becomes difficult without a receipt. Should you decide to take the registry route, consider the fact that some of your quests may not be able to afford the gifts specified, so try to include some at both ends of the price range. A few stores offer a 10% voucher for the total amount sold. People usually make enquiries about gifts when they accept your wedding invitation, so perhaps you can have your intention printed onto the acceptance cards (if you are having them). It not, then offer your guests an option: if they want to, they can go to the registry for your gifts - if not - they can go elsewhere without hurting your feelings. You could also tell selected close friends and family who won`t get offended, about the registry through word of mouth. That way you wll keep your parents happy.
